In April 2012, we returned to the Canary Islands, this time choosing Fuerteventura for its pristine beaches and laid-back atmosphere. While neighboring Lanzarote had captivated us with its volcanic drama, Fuerteventura offered something different – endless stretches of golden sand, turquoise waters, and a slower pace that invited pure relaxation.
Fuerteventura, An Island of Endless Beaches
Fuerteventura is the second largest Canary Island, yet it feels wonderfully uncrowded and peaceful. April blessed us with perfect weather – warm sunshine, gentle breezes, and clear blue skies that made every beach day idyllic. The island's desert-like landscape, shaped by African winds, created a unique backdrop of rolling dunes and volcanic peaks meeting the Atlantic Ocean.
"Some places are meant for adventure, others for simply being – Fuerteventura reminded us of the beauty in slowing down."

Sun, Sand, and Serenity
Our time in Fuerteventura was all about embracing island life at its most relaxed. Long beach days, fresh seafood, and stunning natural scenery combined to create the perfect escape. The island's unspoiled beauty and authentic Canarian charm made us feel far removed from everyday life.
- Corralejo and Its Dunes: The town of Corralejo served as our base, with its excellent restaurants and relaxed vibe. The nearby natural park with vast sand dunes stretching to the sea felt like a slice of the Sahara meeting the Atlantic.
- Playa de Sotavento: This stunning beach on the island's southeast coast offered miles of white sand and shallow, crystal-clear lagoons. The turquoise waters were some of the most beautiful we'd ever seen.
- Betancuria: We ventured inland to visit the island's former capital, a charming village nestled in a valley. The whitewashed buildings and mountain backdrop provided a glimpse into traditional Fuerteventura life.
- El Cotillo: This fishing village on the northwest coast captivated us with its authentic character, rocky coves, and lighthouse. We enjoyed fresh fish at local restaurants overlooking the harbor.
- Water Sports: Fuerteventura's consistent winds and waves make it a paradise for surfers and windsurfers. We enjoyed watching the colorful sails dotting the horizon from our spot on the beach.
Fuerteventura proved to be exactly what we needed – a place to unwind, reconnect, and appreciate life's simple pleasures. The island's natural beauty, from its endless beaches to its dramatic volcanic interior, offered a perfect balance of relaxation and exploration. We left with sun-kissed skin, recharged spirits, and a promise to return to this tranquil corner of the Canaries.
